The death toll in the CNG cylinder explosion at a fuel station in Delhi’s Outer area rose to three on Wednesday, with officials confirming that all three victims were employees of the station.
The blast occurred when a CNG cylinder fitted in a truck exploded while the vehicle was being refuelled near Tikri Kalan Metro Station, officials said. Six other people were injured in the incident and were reported to be in critical condition.
One of the deceased was identified as 25-year-old Manish, a resident of Baba Haridas Colony in West Delhi. Officials said he was filling CNG into the truck’s cylinder when the explosion took place. Another victim was identified as 32-year-old Sunny Nizampur. The identity of the third deceased was yet to be established.
Officials said all three were working at the CNG station and cautioned that the death toll could rise given the condition of those injured.
According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), six people who were standing nearby at the time of the explosion suffered injuries. A call about the blast was received at around 3.37 p.m., following which six fire tenders were rushed to the site.
Large teams of Delhi Police and fire personnel were deployed immediately after the incident, while the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. A fire service official said an investigation was underway to determine what triggered the blast.
The explosion caused panic in the surrounding area, prompting emergency personnel to undertake precautionary measures. Officials said the situation was under control but appealed to the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
