Indian content creator and influencer Apoorva Makhija, popularly known as Rebel Kid, has confirmed that she has moved to New York, saying her strong connection with the city influenced her decision to relocate from India.
Makhija confirmed the move through a social media post following the release of her appearance on a podcast. Responding to questions from followers about her whereabouts, she wrote, “Soo… I don’t live in India anymore.”
In the podcast, Makhija explained that she does not see herself spending her entire life building a career and life in India. She also said she does not plan to remain a content creator indefinitely and wants to eventually explore business.
Reflecting on her college years, Makhija said the experience was different from what she had imagined. The first two years were affected by the Covid-19 lockdown, while much of the remaining period was spent in a relationship. She also said she realised she had relatively few friends from college, with most of her current friendships being with fellow content creators.
While acknowledging that she is currently living in what she considers the best city in India, Makhija said she does not envision spending her future travelling and commuting daily between Andheri and Colaba.
She said her desire to live in New York developed after visiting the city despite having travelled extensively elsewhere.
“I have traveled quite a lot and when I landed in New York I was like, ‘I really want to live here’,” she said.
Makhija cited the city’s pace, fashion, food and architecture among the factors that attracted her. She also said New York had featured prominently in many of the web series she enjoys.
Her interest in studying in the city was strong enough for her to apply to only one college there. “I was like ‘If I get in. I get in and I’ll go’,” she said.
Makhija’s plans to move abroad had been under consideration for some time. In June 2025, she had spoken about potentially relocating for higher studies and said she was preparing for a master’s degree in fashion or management.
She gained wider national attention after appearing on comedian Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent, where an argument involving another participant led to legal controversy.
Makhija has also appeared on reality shows including The Traitors and Lock Upp Season 2.
