Iran has warned countries in West Asia against providing assistance or facilities to the United States military, as tensions continue to rise between Tehran and regional states.
Ali Abdollahi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, issued the warning in a social media post on Wednesday, saying Iran was closely monitoring developments and military movements across the region.
“We warn that providing any assistance or facility to the aggressive US Army constitutes complicity with US military forces,” Abdollahi said.
Iranian authorities have repeatedly said they do not harbour hostility towards neighbouring countries but have warned that any location in West Asia used as a launch point for attacks against Iran could be treated as a legitimate target by Iranian forces.
The warning came amid a fresh dispute between Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei earlier rejected the UAE’s allegation that Iran had launched missiles towards its territory.
The UAE said on Tuesday that it had detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran. Its Defence Ministry said one missile fell outside UAE territorial waters while the other landed within them. It said the missiles were targeting maritime traffic, with no casualties or damage reported.
Baghaei criticised the UAE’s accusation, saying it ran counter to good-neighbourly relations and efforts to build trust among countries in the region. He urged regional nations to avoid what he called “baseless” allegations against Iran.
The UAE Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the country had suspended all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice. Afra Al Hameli, the ministry’s strategic communications director, attributed the decision to escalating tensions that threaten regional and international peace and security.
The UAE statement also reaffirmed its support for dialogue, cooperation and regional integration as means of promoting peace and stability.
