A court in West Bengal’s Krishnanagar on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra in connection with a case arising from alleged controversial remarks concerning the Indian Army, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and religious practices.
The warrant was issued after Moitra allegedly failed to appear before the court despite being summoned on multiple occasions, according to the complainant’s lawyer.
The case was filed by Chayan Nandi, a resident of Krishnanagar’s Nazirapara area in Nadia district. His lawyer, Shirshendu Das, appeared before the court and argued that Moitra had repeatedly been directed to appear in person but had not attended any hearing.
Speaking to the media, Das said the complaint concerned alleged indecent remarks about women wearing Tulsi malas, burqas and hijabs, besides alleged comments against the Union Home Minister, the Army and soldiers. He said an arrest warrant was issued by Judicial Magistrate Third Court Judge Dibyendu Das after Moitra failed to appear despite repeated summons.
The case invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), including provisions relating to alleged outraging of the modesty of women, promoting enmity between groups, hurting religious sentiments, intimidation and hate speech.
The controversy surrounding Moitra’s remarks has previously triggered political criticism, particularly over her comments concerning the armed forces and the Union Home Minister.
Separately, Moitra recently appeared at Hogalberia police station in Nadia in connection with another case following a court direction. She subsequently stayed at the Circuit House in Krishnanagar and alleged that she was harassed there during the night. The administration reportedly asked her to leave the premises.
BJP workers and supporters had gathered outside the Circuit House and staged a protest. Moitra later posted a series of videos on social media describing the incident and also wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker regarding the matter.
