Indian benchmark equity indices extended their losing streak on Wednesday, with the Nifty declining for a seventh consecutive session and the Sensex falling for the fourth straight day amid weakness across global markets.
The Nifty slipped 76.60 points, or 0.32 per cent, to close at 24,078.30, while the Sensex declined 325.78 points, or 0.42 per cent, to settle at 76,909.68.
Wednesday’s decline marked the Nifty’s longest losing run since September 2025.
Market participants are now closely watching the psychologically important 24,000 level as the next key support for the Nifty. An analyst said a close below 24,050 could increase the possibility of the index testing 24,000 in the next session, while the 24,200-24,300 range is likely to act as an immediate resistance zone during any recovery.
Among Nifty constituents, Max Healthcare Institute, Coal India and Power Grid Corporation of India were among the biggest laggards.
The broader market also remained under pressure, with the Nifty MidCap index declining 0.21 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap index falling 0.51 per cent.
Sectoral performance was mixed. The Nifty Chemical index was the biggest underperformer, while the Nifty IT index outperformed other sectors.
Within the Sensex pack, HCL Technologies, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Titan were among the notable gainers. Power Grid Corporation, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, ITC and Hindustan Unilever figured among the major losers.
Analysts said the weakness in domestic equities reflected the cautious sentiment prevailing across global markets, extending pressure on benchmark indices.
With the Q1 FY27 earnings season nearing its end, corporate results have generally surpassed expectations, reinforcing confidence in earnings resilience, an analyst said.
However, experts noted that as temporary market tailwinds fade, the market’s next phase of performance could depend significantly on the stability of crude oil supply chains.
