RJD leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav was detained by police on Wednesday during the party’s ‘Lok Bhavan March’ in Patna, after protesters attempted to cross barricades at Dak Bungalow Crossing. Police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators.
The march was organised over student grievances, unemployment and the alleged use of an AK-47 during a student protest in Siwan.
Tensions escalated when RJD supporters tried to move beyond the police barricades at Dak Bungalow Crossing. Party workers carried a large cutout depicting an AK-47 while raising the issue of the alleged firing in Siwan.
The RJD’s National Working President alleged that the police action was being carried out on the instructions of Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary. He said attempts to prevent the demonstration would not weaken the movement and maintained that people had taken to the streets to raise their concerns.
RJD Lok Sabha member from Patliputra Misa Bharti also joined the march. Referring to the alleged deployment of an AK-47 against students, she questioned who had authorised the use of the weapon.
Bharti said that if the action had been approved by the District Magistrate or Superintendent of Police, accountability should also extend to the officials who authorised it.
The RJD mobilisation came amid a separate student protest in Patna concerning the BPSC TRE-4 recruitment examination. While the examination advertisement has been issued, candidates are opposing the inclusion of negative marking in both the preliminary and main examinations and demanding its withdrawal.
Ahead of the RJD march, Patna Traffic Police imposed restrictions around Dak Bungalow Crossing. Traffic coming from Patna Junction and the railway station towards the crossing was restricted, with commuters advised to take alternative routes.
The confrontation at Dak Bungalow Crossing turned the planned RJD march into a major political face-off, with the Opposition linking student concerns, recruitment examination policies, unemployment and the Siwan firing controversy in its criticism of the state government.
