OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has outlined a vision for a future version of ChatGPT that could continuously understand a user’s digital activities, including computer screens, meetings and calls, to provide more context-sensitive assistance.
Speaking in an interview with Z Fellows founder Cory Levy, Altman said such an AI assistant could potentially be available within the next six months. He described a system capable of understanding a user’s broader context by accessing information from meetings, calls and other sources, subject to the user’s permission.
Altman said users could decide what information the assistant is allowed to access, including text messages, emails, documents and workplace platforms such as Slack. The AI, he stressed, would not make decisions on a user’s behalf but could suggest ideas and perform tasks when authorised.
“I think we’re only one model generation away from this actually being incredibly useful,” Altman said, adding that he hoped such technology would significantly change the way he works.
He illustrated the potential through the example of a startup CEO dealing with more information and tasks than can be manually tracked. An AI assistant could work alongside the executive while they draft a sales pitch or strategy document, identify a possible mistake or offer to complete a task.
For instance, while preparing a sales email, the assistant could draw on a customer’s history, previous conversations and relevant documents to offer real-time suggestions.
The proposed system would therefore go beyond responding to individual prompts and instead build an understanding of what a user is doing across multiple activities to provide assistance based on the surrounding context.
OpenAI already provides ChatGPT features that use information from previous conversations to personalise responses. Users can manage memory and chat-history settings, including disabling saved memories.
The company has also introduced a Computer History feature for the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS. The opt-in feature creates a searchable timeline of desktop activity by recording interactions such as clicks, application switching, typing and keyboard shortcuts. It excludes content from private or incognito browsing windows and can identify repetitive activities to suggest recurring workflows or automations.
