Iran on Wednesday rejected the United Arab Emirates’ claim that Tehran had launched a missile towards the UAE, with Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei describing the allegation as unfounded.
The denial followed a statement by the UAE on Tuesday that its authorities had detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran earlier in the day.
Baghaei expressed regret over what he described as an accusation against Iran, saying the UAE’s move was inconsistent with the principle of good neighbourly relations and could undermine efforts to build trust among countries in the region and prevent further insecurity in West Asia.
He urged regional countries to avoid making what he called “baseless” allegations against Iran, citing the existing tensions in the region and what Tehran describes as continued actions by the United States and Israel against regional peace and security.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday that one of the two missiles fell outside the country’s territorial waters, while the other landed within them, Xinhua news agency reported.
The ministry said the UAE remained on high alert and was prepared to respond to threats that could affect its security, sovereignty and stability. It added that the missiles were targeting maritime traffic.
No casualties or damage had been reported in connection with the missile incidents, according to the UAE authorities.
In a separate development, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said early Wednesday that the country had suspended all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice.
Afra Al Hameli, Director of the ministry’s Strategic Communications Department, said the decision followed escalating tensions that were undermining regional and international peace and security.
The UAE statement nevertheless reaffirmed the country’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation and regional integration, describing them as essential to advancing peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
The exchange comes amid heightened regional tensions, with both countries presenting sharply different accounts of the reported missile incidents.
