Punjab Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat on Tuesday urged farmers across the state to adopt crop diversification and shift towards high-value horticultural crops to improve their incomes, while stressing the government’s commitment to strengthening the horticulture sector.
Bhagat said diversification into fruits, vegetables, flowers, mushroom cultivation and other high-value horticultural activities could open up additional and more remunerative income avenues for farmers. He advised farmers to select crops after considering market demand, soil suitability and local climatic conditions.
The Minister said the Punjab Government was promoting modern technologies and improved infrastructure to make horticulture more sustainable and profitable. Initiatives include efficient irrigation systems, protected cultivation, post-harvest management, cold-chain infrastructure and value addition.
He said these measures were aimed at providing farmers with support across the entire chain, from cultivation and production to post-harvest handling and marketing.
Bhagat urged farmers interested in horticultural activities to approach the nearest Horticulture Office in their respective districts to access the benefits available under various schemes being implemented by the department.
He said the government’s efforts were focused on encouraging farmers to explore viable alternatives to conventional cropping and create sustainable opportunities for higher agricultural returns.
