Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using Enforcement Directorate (ED) searches against those associated with educational institutions to appease its remaining “communal” supporters.
Yadav was reacting to ED searches at multiple locations linked to jailed former Rampur MP Azam Khan in connection with a money laundering investigation involving the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University and its associated trust.
In a post on X, the SP chief alleged that the BJP was targeting people involved in establishing universities while overlooking individuals facing allegations of corruption and other wrongdoing.
He accused the BJP and its allies of being “anti-education, anti-teacher, and anti-student” and claimed that the raids were aimed at appeasing a small section of its supporters whom he described as “communal” and “narrow-minded”.
Yadav also listed several issues that he claimed had not received adequate action, including alleged irregularities related to Ram Temple donations, the codeine trade and the condition of infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.
The Kannauj MP alleged that several major road and infrastructure projects had deteriorated during the BJP government’s tenure. He cited the Bundelkhand and Purvanchal expressways and alleged potholes on the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway.
He further raised questions over alleged cracks in a green corridor, damaged roads, deteriorating bridges, collapsing water tanks, leaking roofs and damaged station walls.
Yadav also alleged corruption involving police officials in BJP-ruled states and questioned the handling of alleged irregularities in the Maha Kumbh and Smart City projects.
The SP chief further alleged that BJP representatives were involved in illegal construction on land without necessary approvals and questioned why action was allegedly not being taken against those facing such allegations.
He also raised allegations concerning an alleged distribution of around Rs 7,000 crore, claiming that publicity and controversial statements were being used to divert attention from the matter.
The ED searches followed its money laundering probe into matters linked to Azam Khan, the Jauhar University and its associated trust. The allegations raised by Yadav are political claims and have not been established by a court.
