The Delhi Police Crime Branch has apprehended a Pakistani national who was allegedly living illegally in the national capital, officials said on Wednesday.
The man was apprehended from the Old Delhi area on August 15. According to investigators, he had entered India through the Nepal border and was working at a restaurant in Delhi.
Police said the man’s mother was originally an Indian citizen and a resident of Delhi before marrying a Pakistani national, following which she acquired Pakistani citizenship.
The apprehended man was questioned extensively by central agencies, including the Crime Branch. Police said no terror-related angle had emerged during the investigation so far.
The Crime Branch subsequently handed him over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), and proceedings for his deportation to Pakistan have been initiated.
The action comes amid intensified checks on foreign nationals residing in Delhi. In a separate operation last week, the Delhi Police Foreigner Cell of the Special Staff in Central District apprehended two Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly overstaying their permitted visa period under Operation VISTA 1.0.
The operation was launched to verify the visa status of foreign nationals residing in the capital and initiate legal action against those violating immigration rules. Police conducted checks at hotels and guest houses across Central Delhi.
During one such verification drive at a hotel on Arakashan Road in Nabi Karim, police found two Bangladeshi nationals and examined their passports and visas. Investigators found that both had exceeded the period of stay permitted under their visas.
According to police, the two men had entered India on June 23 on double-entry visas. Although their passports were valid until September 3, their visas permitted a maximum stay of 15 days per visit.
The two were identified as 23-year-old MD Anharul Islam Sourob Khan of Habiganj, Bangladesh, and 27-year-old Tarikul Islam Sujan of Cumilla, Bangladesh.
