The Rajasthan government has ordered a factual enquiry into the alleged illegal sale in Delhi of cancer injections originally supplied through the Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) to the Government Cancer Hospital in Bikaner, Health Minister Gajendra Singh said on Wednesday.
The minister took serious note of reports that government-issued injections, meant to be provided free of cost to advanced cancer patients at the Bikaner hospital, had surfaced on the black market in Delhi.
The Delhi Police Crime Branch’s Inter-State Cell recently uncovered a racket allegedly involved in the black marketing of expensive cancer injections. Police arrested the accused and seized 22 vials, including four that were identified as part of government stock supplied to the Bikaner cancer hospital.
Gajendra Singh directed RMSCL and other concerned officials to examine the entire medicine supply chain, including stock registers, indents, dispatch records and hospital-level distribution records. The exercise is aimed at establishing how the government-supplied medicines reached the illegal market and identifying any discrepancies.
The minister said black marketing or unauthorised sale of costly, life-saving medicines supplied for patients in government hospitals would not be tolerated.
He directed officials to take strict action under applicable rules if the enquiry establishes any irregularity, negligence or collusion at any stage. Accountability will also be fixed on officials or employees found responsible, he said.
The minister emphasised that the state government was committed to ensuring quality treatment and uninterrupted availability of essential medicines to patients. He said the supply, distribution and proper utilisation of expensive medicines used to treat serious diseases such as cancer were being monitored regularly.
Gajendra Singh also ordered officials to further strengthen the government medicine procurement and distribution system and make it more transparent, accountable and robust.
The government said further action in the case would be determined on the basis of the enquiry findings.
