Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) National Working President and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav was released from the Secretariat police station on Wednesday after being detained during the party’s march to Raj Bhavan in Patna.
Speaking after his release, Yadav said the RJD would continue its agitation until Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary took responsibility for the situation and strict action was initiated against those responsible.
He said the party would continue to raise issues concerning students, seek accountability in the Siwan firing case and press for solutions to unemployment and recruitment-related concerns.
Yadav accused the Bihar government and administration of attempting to suppress the voice of young people and said the RJD would continue to raise students’ concerns both on the streets and inside the state Assembly.
The march was organised primarily over allegations that an AK-47 was used during student protests in Siwan. The protesters also raised concerns over examination irregularities, unemployment and recruitment.
A police constable accused of firing the weapon was suspended, while Siwan Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha was transferred on August 18.
During Wednesday’s protest, demonstrators crossed barricades at Dakbungalow Crossing before being stopped near the Income Tax Roundabout. Police used water cannons and detained several protesters, including Yadav. Some demonstrators carried dummy AK-47s to symbolically highlight their allegations.
RJD MP Manoj Jha said the march was aimed at presenting students’ concerns to the Governor, particularly those related to examination transparency and alleged police action against protesting students.
Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi, however, dismissed the agitation as a political exercise and accused Yadav of attempting to revive his political fortunes. He said the state government had already taken measures against paper leaks, including legislation prescribing penalties of up to Rs 1 crore and imprisonment of up to eight years for offences related to examination paper leaks.
The detention has intensified the political confrontation between the RJD and the Bihar government over student protests, examination reforms, unemployment and police accountability.
