A Level-I fire broke out at a commercial building on Kandivali Station Road in Mumbai’s Kandivali West early Monday, with 11 people rescued safely from a lodging house on the second floor, the Mumbai Fire Brigade said.
The fire was reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade Control at around 4.14 a.m. at Abhirai Hotel on Kandivali Station Road.
According to the fire brigade, the blaze was confined to electrical wiring and installations, wooden furniture, tarpaulin, bamboo and plastic materials at an adjacent temporary fruit stall. The fire also damaged clothes, wooden furniture and a false ceiling spread over approximately 50 square feet on the fourth floor.
Aluminium and plastic decorative sheets on the exterior of the building were also affected.
The commercial building comprises a basement, ground floor and four upper floors and was completely filled with smoke during the incident.
Firefighters safely evacuated 11 people from the second-floor lodging house through the staircase. No injuries were reported.
The fire brigade classified the incident as Level-I and brought the blaze under control and extinguished it by 6.07 a.m. Firefighters and rescue teams carried out operations at the site to prevent further spread of the fire.
The civic authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the fire.
Earlier this month, two people, including a toddler, were killed and six others injured in a major fire at a residential building in Mumbai’s Vile Parle West. According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident was initially classified as a Level-I fire before escalating to Level-II.
Eight fire tenders and other specialised equipment were deployed during the Vile Parle West operation, officials said.
