National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya K. Rahatkar will undertake a two-day official visit to Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur in Punjab on August 18 and 19, with a focus on women’s safety, empowerment, livelihood opportunities and the impact of substance and drug abuse on women.
During the visit, Rahatkar will participate in programmes and hold meetings with district administration officials, Self-Help Group beneficiaries, local representatives and social workers. The NCW’s mandate includes safeguarding women’s rights, addressing violations and promoting women’s welfare and empowerment.
On August 18, Rahatkar will attend the programme “Menace of Substance Drug Abuse: Uncovering the Burden on Women” at the Red Cross Auditorium in Jalandhar at 10 a.m. The programme will examine the impact of substance and drug abuse on women.
At 11 a.m., she will participate in the “She Serves” programme at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya. The initiative aims to create awareness among young women about career opportunities in the defence services and encourage them to consider careers in the armed forces.
This will be followed by the “Yashoda AI” programme at Lovely Professional University at noon, focusing on awareness and engagement around artificial intelligence and emerging opportunities in the sector.
Rahatkar will later interact with Self-Help Group beneficiaries at the Red Cross Auditorium to discuss women’s economic participation and empowerment. She will also hold a review meeting with senior district administration officials in Jalandhar on issues concerning women and institutional coordination.
The NCW Chairperson is also scheduled to visit the One Stop Centre in Jalandhar and interact with district representatives and social workers working in different fields.
The second day of the visit, August 19, will be focused on programmes and interactions in Hoshiarpur, with emphasis on women’s welfare, empowerment and grassroots engagement.
Rahatkar has been serving as Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, which works on issues including women’s rights, safety, legal awareness, economic empowerment and policy advocacy.
