Delhi Police’s Outer North District has arrested an alleged active member of the Neeraj Bawana/Naveen Bali gang following a brief exchange of fire during a late-night operation on the GTK Road-Hiranki Pushta Road stretch.
The accused, identified as 36-year-old Savinder alias Baba alias Pagal, sustained a bullet injury to his left leg during the encounter and was taken into custody.
According to a Delhi Police press note, the operation was conducted around 10 p.m. on August 3 by teams from the Special Staff and Alipur Police Station after receiving specific intelligence regarding the accused’s movement.
Police alleged that Savinder was actively involved in extortion targeting businessmen and property dealers in the Alipur and Narela areas. Officials said several victims had reportedly refrained from lodging complaints due to fear of retaliation.
Acting on the intelligence, the police laid a trap along the suspect’s route. Officers said that when they intercepted Savinder and asked him to surrender, he allegedly opened indiscriminate fire at the police team.
During the exchange, a bullet struck the bulletproof jacket of Sub-Inspector Vishal, allowing him to escape without injury. The police retaliated in self-defence, injuring the accused before overpowering him. No police personnel were injured.
Savinder was initially taken to Raja Harishchandra Hospital for treatment and later shifted to LNJP Hospital, where police said his condition is stable and he remains conscious.
Police recovered a pistol, three live 7.65 mm cartridges, three empty 7.65 mm cartridge cases, and two empty 9 mm cartridge cases from his possession.
According to police records, the accused is involved in six criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, assault and Arms Act offences. He is also accused of issuing threats to local businessmen.
Delhi Police said the arrest is expected to significantly disrupt the activities of the Neeraj Bawana/Naveen Bali gang in Outer North Delhi and provide relief to the local business community. Further investigation and legal proceedings are underway.
