The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday clarified that the Indian government has no involvement in former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s scheduled interaction with the media on August 5, stating that the event is being organised by a private media organisation.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government neither has any association with the programme nor endorses any views that may be expressed during the interaction.
“The interaction being referred to is being organised by a private media entity. The government has no involvement whatsoever in it and does not endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum,” Jaiswal said during the ministry’s bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
The clarification came after Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir reportedly sought India’s cooperation to ensure that Sheikh Hasina or any member of the Awami League does not use Indian territory to make political statements or undertake activities that could create instability in Bangladesh.
According to Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo, the issue was raised during a courtesy meeting between Kabir and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Monday.
Citing the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, the report said discussions included social media reports about Hasina’s planned public address on August 5. Dhaka conveyed that it expected India’s cooperation in ensuring that fugitive Sheikh Hasina or individuals associated with a banned organisation are not permitted to use Indian territory for political activities aimed at affecting Bangladesh’s internal situation.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said the meeting between Kabir and Trivedi focused on strengthening people-centric cooperation between India and Bangladesh based on mutual interests.
“The High Commissioner reiterated India’s intent to work positively with the Government of Bangladesh to advance the developmental aspirations of the peoples of India and Bangladesh,” the mission said in a post on X.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry also stated that both sides underlined the importance of continued dialogue and constructive engagement, expressing hope that long-term solutions to issues between the two countries could be achieved through mutual trust and discussions.
