The West Bengal government will soon introduce an app-based parking management system in Kolkata to curb illegal parking and eliminate unauthorised cash transactions, State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul announced on Tuesday.
The initiative, to be implemented by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in coordination with Kolkata Police, aims to bring greater transparency and streamline parking management across the city.
Emphasising that parking violations will not be tolerated, Paul said vehicles will be permitted only in officially designated parking spaces identified by the municipal corporation.
According to the minister, Kolkata Police has identified around 15,000 parking spaces within the KMC area, of which nearly 10,000 have already been listed. The remaining locations will be reviewed before being added to the official database. Cars and two-wheelers will be allowed to park only in these authorised locations.
Paul said Kolkata Police is developing the mobile application, which will facilitate digital payment of parking charges and reduce cash-based transactions. Each authorised parking site will display a fee chart specifying hourly parking charges for different categories of vehicles.
She added that designated parking personnel will be deployed at each location and will be required to wear a prescribed uniform and carry photo identification. The minister also reiterated that parking on footpaths will not be permitted.
The proposal revives a similar initiative announced in December 2023 by then Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. At the time, the Transport Department, Kolkata Police and the KMC had planned an integrated digital system to detect illegal parking, automatically notify vehicle owners and impose fines through a mobile application.
Under the earlier proposal, vehicle owners were to pay fines within seven days, with penalties increasing for delayed payments. Unpaid fines beyond a year were also expected to affect the issuance of vehicle clearance certificates. However, the system was never implemented due to various reasons.
