Three female relatives of a leader of the Balochistan National Party (BNP) have allegedly been forcibly disappeared by Pakistani security personnel, according to Paank, the human rights department of the Baloch National Movement (BNM).
In a statement, Paank said personnel of Pakistan’s Frontier Corps (FC) intercepted a civilian passenger van travelling from Kalat to Quetta at the Lakhpas FC Checkpost in Mastung district on July 30.
The organisation alleged that FC personnel forcibly removed and detained Rafia Bibi, wife of BNP leader Jumma Khan; his daughter Tania, a school teacher in Quetta; and his niece Javeria, a seventh-grade student. It claimed the three women were taken to an undisclosed location and that their whereabouts remain unknown.
Paank described the incident as a matter of serious concern, alleging that the detention of women and family members of political activists reflected intimidation, collective punishment and reprisals against individuals associated with political activism.
The organisation called on Pakistani authorities to immediately disclose the whereabouts of the three women, allow them access to their families and legal counsel, and release them without delay if they are being held unlawfully. It also demanded an independent, impartial and transparent investigation into the alleged enforced disappearances and accountability for those found responsible in accordance with Pakistan’s international human rights obligations.
In a separate statement, Paank also expressed concern over the alleged enforced disappearances of two other individuals.
According to the organisation, Allah Bakhsh, 28, a teacher from Tikri village in Karachi’s Mauripur area, was allegedly taken from his residence during a Rangers operation at around 5 a.m. on August 2. His whereabouts remain unknown, it said.
Paank further alleged that Zubair Ahmed, 23, a chemistry graduate from Charai Baloch Abad in Hub Chowki, was forcibly disappeared on July 30. His family has alleged that personnel from Pakistan’s Military Intelligence (MI) were involved in the incident, while no official information has been provided regarding his whereabouts.
Describing enforced disappearance as a serious violation of international human rights law, Paank urged Pakistani authorities to disclose the fate and location of Allah Bakhsh and Zubair Ahmed and ensure their access to legal representation and family members.
