The Centre is likely to seek answers from senior Meta executives on August 5 over concerns related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), WhatsApp usernames, synthetic content and content moderation practices across the company’s platforms.
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S. Krishnan said the government would discuss several issues with Meta during a meeting scheduled with the company’s representatives.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Voice of India, an independent multimodal artificial intelligence evaluation platform developed jointly by AI4Bharat and Josh Talks AI, Krishnan said the government wanted clarity on the measures being taken by Meta to address concerns raised over its platforms.
A major issue expected to come up during the meeting is the spread of child sexual abuse material. Krishnan said the government would seek details about the steps taken by Meta to prevent the circulation of such content.
“There are a range of issues. The issue of CSAM was raised with them, so we will want to understand what measures have been taken to tackle that,” he said.
The discussions are also expected to cover safeguards related to artificially generated content and the removal of posts belonging to verified users and prominent personalities. Krishnan said adequate checks should exist before content from verified accounts is taken down.
Officials are likely to seek information about Meta’s internal mechanisms for handling such issues, the effectiveness of existing systems and the challenges faced by the company in implementing safeguards.
The meeting follows the government’s recent decision to summon Meta’s President of Global Affairs Joel Kaplan for an in-person discussion on the company’s content moderation policies.
The move came after a social media post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, relating to protests by students over examination paper leaks, was removed from Meta’s platform. The company later said the removal was due to an error in its automated enforcement system and apologised for the unintended action.
Meta has faced increased scrutiny from the government in recent weeks over issues related to platform safety and content regulation.
Earlier, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology had asked WhatsApp to defer the rollout of its username feature until concerns over impersonation, online fraud and cybercrime risks were adequately addressed.
