The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Tuesday strongly criticised remarks made by Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin on Islamic seminaries, describing them as inflammatory, misleading and without factual basis. The Board also urged the Union government to take serious note of the comments and prevent what it termed interference in India’s internal and religious affairs by foreign nationals.
In a statement, AIMPLB spokesperson S.Q.R. Ilyas said madrasas have made significant contributions to education and society, and alleged attempts to defame such institutions were unjust and harmful to the country’s educational system as well as communal harmony.
The Board’s response came after Nasrin reportedly made comments in Kolkata concerning the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and Islamic seminaries. AIMPLB described the remarks as an irresponsible attempt by a foreign national to intervene in India’s internal affairs.
Ilyas rejected allegations that madrasas promote extremism or produce “jihadis”, calling such assertions false, defamatory and an attempt to malign a longstanding religious and educational tradition. He said the comments had hurt the sentiments of millions of Indian Muslims and could disturb communal harmony.
Expressing concern over the author’s statements, Ilyas said it was regrettable that a foreign national living in India as a refugee was commenting on the country’s religious, constitutional and social issues. He asserted that while freedom of expression is protected, it should not be used to spread hatred, defame religious institutions or interfere in domestic matters.
The AIMPLB called on the Union government to ensure that the law is enforced in such cases and that similar statements are not repeated in the future.
The Board also objected to Nasrin’s reported remarks concerning Bangladesh, with Ilyas saying such comments were inconsistent with India’s balanced foreign policy and could have an adverse impact on bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. He urged the Centre to take note of that aspect as well.
