Trinamool Congress supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that she has not received royalties from her books during the current year, claiming that political pressure may be behind the delay.
In a Facebook Live address, Banerjee said she has never drawn a salary during her tenure as Chief Minister and has also not taken her pension as a Member of Parliament. She said royalties from her books have been her source of income.
“Some people spread all kinds of lies about me. They know that I have not taken a single penny as salary during my term as Chief Minister. I have not taken a single penny as MP’s pension till date. I survive on the royalties from my books. But I have not received the royalties this year,” Banerjee said.
She alleged that people associated with the payment process were remaining silent due to pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“People bought books written by me at the book fair. I have not received it till today. Surely there is a game behind it,” she added.
Banerjee, who has increasingly been using Facebook Live to communicate with the public instead of direct media interactions, also accused the BJP-led government in West Bengal of restricting her political activities.
“I am not being allowed to go out on the streets. I am not being allowed to hold political programmes. I have to go to court to get permission for rallies. Constitutional and democratic rights are being violated,” she alleged.
The TMC chief further claimed that while other political parties were allowed to conduct programmes, her party faced restrictions, and alleged that district councils and panchayats were being taken over forcefully.
She also alleged that despite the Trinamool Congress never accepting overseas funds, the party’s bank accounts had been deliberately frozen.
“The more they try to stop me, the more I will turn around. They must not forget that I have been doing student politics and youth politics. I do not care about the chair; I care only about the people,” Banerjee said.
