Udhayanidhi Stalin Refuses to Get Down From Police Vehicle During Thanjavur Questioning

Chennai, August 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

High drama unfolded in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district on Tuesday after Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin reportedly refused to step out of a police vehicle at Sengipatti Police Station, where he was taken for questioning in connection with a case over his alleged double-meaning remarks involving actor Trisha.

Police had initially planned to question Udhayanidhi, who is also DMK Youth Wing secretary and Chepauk MLA, at Thanjavur South Police Station. However, the venue was later shifted to Sengipatti, reportedly after a large gathering of DMK workers assembled near the original location.

According to reports, Udhayanidhi objected to the change of venue, stating that the court’s direction required him to be questioned at the police station concerned with the case. He reportedly refused to get down from the vehicle after being brought to Sengipatti, creating uncertainty over the questioning process.

The development followed a dramatic morning when a police team reached Udhayanidhi’s residence in Chennai’s Neelankarai area and took him into custody for questioning.

The case was registered following a complaint filed by a functionary of the women’s wing of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Thanjavur. The complaint relates to remarks allegedly made by Udhayanidhi during a DMK protest over the Cauvery water issue on Monday. The complainant alleged that the DMK leader made an objectionable double entendre involving actor Trisha while criticising Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

The police action triggered protests by DMK workers at several locations. Party cadres gathered outside Udhayanidhi’s residence, the DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, and various places in Thanjavur district. Demonstrations were also held along the route taken by the police vehicle carrying Udhayanidhi from Chennai to Thanjavur.

Several protesters were detained by police after they attempted to block roads and raise slogans against the TVK government.

Meanwhile, the matter reached the Madras High Court, where the state government informed the court that police did not intend to seek Udhayanidhi Stalin’s judicial remand. Following the submission, the court directed that he be released on station bail after completion of questioning on Tuesday.
