Several WhatsApp users have reported that their accounts were unexpectedly placed under review, leaving them temporarily unable to access key features of the Meta-owned messaging platform.
Users said the issue surfaced on Monday evening, with many claiming they received no prior warning before access to their accounts was restricted. According to screenshots shared by affected users, WhatsApp displayed a notification stating that the account activity and device information were being reviewed to ensure compliance with the platform’s Terms of Service. The message indicated that the review process would typically be completed within 24 hours.
The notification also directed users to a “Learn about account issues” section, which provides information on responsible use of the platform, compromised accounts, and steps to take in cases involving stolen devices.
Several users took to social media platform X to express frustration over the disruption. Some said their accounts had been disabled without explanation despite using only the official WhatsApp application, while others highlighted the impact on their work and daily communication. Many said they had already submitted appeals but were only shown a generic message stating that the review would normally be completed within 24 hours.
The development comes weeks after reports indicated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) was examining the possibility of introducing a common regulatory framework for messaging platforms operating in India.
The reported discussions followed the government’s objections to WhatsApp’s proposed username feature, which would allow users to communicate without sharing their mobile phone numbers. According to reports, MeitY is considering uniform standards applicable across messaging services rather than platform-specific regulations.
