Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir has sought India’s cooperation to ensure that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other leaders of the Awami League do not use Indian territory to make political statements or undertake activities that could destabilise Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh’s Prothom Alo newspaper, the issue was raised during a courtesy meeting between Kabir and Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Dinesh Trivedi on Monday afternoon.
Citing a statement issued by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the report said the discussion referred to social media reports claiming that Sheikh Hasina was expected to deliver a public address on August 5.
The ministry’s statement said Bangladesh expects India’s cooperation in ensuring that individuals associated with the banned Awami League, including “fugitive” former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, are not allowed to use Indian territory for political activities or statements that could create instability in Bangladesh.
According to the statement, the Indian High Commissioner assured the Bangladesh side that he would take the matter into due consideration, make the necessary inquiries and remain vigilant regarding the issue.
Separately, the High Commission of India in Dhaka said the meeting focused on strengthening people-centric cooperation between India and Bangladesh based on mutual interest and mutual benefit.
In a post on X, the High Commission stated that the Indian High Commissioner reiterated India’s willingness to work constructively with the Government of Bangladesh to advance the developmental aspirations of the people of both countries.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry also said both sides emphasised the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and constructive engagement, expressing hope that long-term and sustainable solutions to outstanding issues could be achieved through mutual trust and discussions.
