Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday condemned the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district that killed two migrant workers from Chhattisgarh, calling for the harshest punishment for those responsible.
Expressing grief over the killings, Gandhi conveyed condolences to the families of the victims and said the country remained united in its fight against terrorism.
“The cowardly terrorist attack in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the murder of two workers from our country, is extremely tragic. I extend my condolences to the grieving families. Strict action must be taken against the terrorists for this dastardly attack, and they must receive the harshest possible punishment. The nation remains united against terrorism,” Gandhi said in a post on X.
The attack took place on Friday evening in Kellam village of Kulgam district, where terrorists opened fire on two brick kiln workers from Chhattisgarh, critically injuring them.
The injured workers were initially taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag. One of the victims, identified as Deepak, died during treatment on Friday night. The second victim, Bopinder, was shifted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.
The killings have triggered widespread condemnation, with political and religious leaders describing the attack as a strike against innocent civilians.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the incident and announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased workers from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
The attack comes less than two weeks after terrorists killed Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi in Anantnag on July 22 while he was deployed for security duties during the annual Amarnath Yatra.
Security agencies have noted increased attacks targeting unarmed civilians, including migrant workers, vendors and drivers, as part of attempts to create fear and disturb normal life in the Kashmir Valley. Following recent incidents, security forces and the Jammu and Kashmir Police have stepped up monitoring around transit camps and areas housing non-local workers.
