Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Indian athletes Lovepreet Singh and Seema Kaliramna for their medal-winning performances at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, praising their determination and contribution to India’s campaign.
Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh secured the silver medal in the men’s +110kg category after finishing with a combined lift of 388kg, narrowly missing the gold by just one kilogram. New Zealand’s David Liti claimed the top spot with a total lift of 389kg.
Lovepreet also created a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event, adding another milestone to his impressive performance.
Congratulating the athlete, Prime Minister Modi wrote on X, “Exceptional performance by Lovepreet Singh for winning a Silver in the Men’s +110kg event. His outstanding effort in the snatch set a new Commonwealth Games record too. His dedication and determination are truly admirable. My best wishes to him for the endeavours ahead.”
In athletics, Seema Kaliramna earned the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw with a best effort of 58.65 metres. Competing in challenging conditions, she registered only two valid throws in six attempts after several fouls, including throws that struck the side netting. Her second valid attempt of 58.65 metres proved sufficient to secure a place on the podium.
The Prime Minister also congratulated Seema on her achievement, saying, “Congratulations to Seema for securing a Bronze in the Women’s Discus Throw event with a best throw of 58.65m. Her efforts have made India proud and motivated the youth of our nation. Wishing her the very best for the endeavours ahead.”
The two medals further strengthened India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games. With these additions, India’s medal tally rose to 17, comprising three gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals.
