The Kolkata Police has unveiled specially designed uniforms and helmets for members of the Durga Suraksha Squad, a women’s safety initiative launched earlier this month to strengthen awareness and response against crimes targeting women.
Officials said squad members patrolling the city on scooters will now wear distinctive pink-and-orange waistcoats over their uniforms. The design incorporates the image of Goddess Durga along with her trident, symbolising compassion and strength, while prominently displaying the words “Durga Suraksha Squad” in English on both the front and back.
According to police officials, the new attire has been created to reflect the squad’s dual responsibility of extending support to women in distress while taking firm action against crimes and violence against women. The waistcoats have been made from lightweight, durable material and include multiple pockets to ensure comfort, ease of movement and operational efficiency during patrol duties.
The Kolkata Police Headquarters at Lalbazar has placed an order for 110 waistcoats at an estimated cost of ₹2.75 lakh. Manufacturers have been instructed to ensure the garments are sturdy, comfortable and suitable for personnel of different body types without affecting their mobility or performance.
In addition to the new uniforms, the squad will also be equipped with specially designed pink helmets carrying the Kolkata Police logo. The helmets will feature multilayer soft padding, full-side protection, chin guards and adequate ventilation to enhance safety during patrols. Around 80 helmets have been ordered at an estimated cost of ₹1.08 lakh.
The Durga Suraksha Squad conducts regular scooter patrols across Kolkata as part of a broader women’s safety initiative. The programme is supported by coordinated patrols involving local police stations, women’s police stations, women’s cells and the cyber police station to strengthen security and provide quicker assistance to women across the city.
