The Income Tax Department on Thursday said more than five crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, urging taxpayers to avoid the last-minute rush and complete the filing process well before the July 31 deadline.
In a post on social media platform X, the department advised eligible taxpayers to reconcile their financial records and file ITR-1 or ITR-2 without delay to avoid possible technical issues and heavy traffic on the e-filing portal as the due date approaches.
The July 31 deadline applies to taxpayers whose accounts are not required to be audited for AY 2026-27, corresponding to the financial year 2025-26.
The department reiterated that taxpayers should verify all relevant financial information before submitting their returns. It advised cross-checking details available in Form 16, the Annual Information Statement (AIS), Form 26AS, bank statements and other records of income to ensure accurate filing.
The tax authority has repeatedly cautioned taxpayers against postponing the process, warning that increased portal traffic closer to the deadline could result in delays or technical difficulties.
Earlier, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) notified revised ITR forms for AY 2026-27, introducing updated disclosure requirements relating to long-term capital gains, losses arising from share buybacks and certain trading transactions.
The pace of return filing has accelerated steadily in recent weeks. As of July 27, more than four crore ITRs had already been filed, compared with over 1.7 crore filed at an earlier stage of the filing season.
During the previous financial year (FY 2024-25), more than nine crore taxpayers filed income tax returns by March 31, 2025. Of these, 8.64 crore returns were successfully e-verified, while refunds amounting to ₹4,35,008 crore were issued during the period.
