SGPC Puts on Hold Installation of Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Portrait in Sikh Museum Amid Rajoana’s Objection

SGPC announces reconsideration of its decision

Amritsar, May 23, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to temporarily postpone its decision to install a portrait of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the Central Sikh Museum, following objections from various Sikh groups and individuals.

SGPC Secretary Pratap Singh informed that the matter had been taken up during a recent Executive Committee meeting, where the decision to honor Dr. Singh was initially approved. However, the proposal sparked controversy and discontent within sections of the Sikh community.

One of the strongest objections came from Balwant Singh Rajoana, a death row convict in the assassination case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. In a letter addressed to SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, Rajoana urged the Sikh body to refrain from installing the portrait of Dr. Singh, citing ideological differences and historical concerns.

Acknowledging the growing concerns, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has directed the committee to defer the decision. “The SGPC respects the sentiments of the Sikh community, and it is essential to achieve consensus before proceeding with such sensitive decisions,” said Secretary Pratap Singh.

He further added that the issue will be re-evaluated in an upcoming meeting of the SGPC’s executive body.

The Central Sikh Museum, located within the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, honors distinguished Sikh personalities. The debate around including Dr. Manmohan Singh reflects ongoing discussions within the Sikh community about historical legacy, political leadership, and community representation.
