Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday condemned the attack at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton that left two people injured, expressing solidarity with the victims and the Sikh community.
Calling the incident “appalling”, Carney said no one should feel unsafe while worshipping and thanked the Edmonton Police Service for its swift response.
In a post on X, Carney said his thoughts were with the two injured people and the wider community affected by the incident. He stressed that everyone should be able to feel safe in their place of worship.
Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre also condemned the attack, describing the violence at the Sikh temple as “horrific” and demanding that the perpetrator be held fully accountable.
Poilievre said authorities must establish the motive behind the attack and ensure that people across Canada can practise their faith peacefully and securely. He also expressed solidarity with Edmonton’s Sikh community and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
The incident took place at the Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple on the northeastern outskirts of Edmonton shortly after 5 a.m., when a man allegedly disrupted morning prayers being held ahead of a wedding ceremony.
The Edmonton Police Service said officers responding to the incident near 14 Street and Horsehill Road arrested a man at the scene. Two adult men were taken for medical treatment, with their injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police have not announced a motive for the attack or confirmed whether it is being investigated as a hate-motivated crime.
The incident has drawn widespread concern within Edmonton’s Sikh community, with community representatives calling for the circumstances surrounding the violence to be fully established.
