UNITED SIKHS Canada has condemned the violent attack at Nanaksar Gurdwara in Edmonton, where two people were injured during early-morning prayers, and called for a comprehensive investigation into whether hate, bias or religious targeting played a role.
The organisation said a gurdwara is a sacred place of worship and that violence within its premises constitutes a serious attack on the faith and security of the Sikh community.
Police have confirmed that a suspect is in custody and that the injuries sustained by the two victims are not life-threatening. UNITED SIKHS said investigators must nevertheless examine all circumstances surrounding the incident, including the possibility of a hate-motivated attack.
The organisation also expressed concern over reports of possible desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, stressing that the reports require immediate verification by authorities.

Calling for decisive action, UNITED SIKHS urged the Edmonton Police Service to conduct a transparent investigation and maintain regular communication with the gurdwara leadership throughout the process.
It also called on provincial authorities to conduct immediate security assessments of Sikh places of worship and increase police patrols around them. The organisation urged federal and provincial governments to ensure swift access to security funding and asked Public Safety Canada to engage directly with Sikh organisations to assess whether existing resources are adequate to address emerging threats.
UNITED SIKHS further stressed the need for culturally appropriate trauma support for victims and members of the affected community. It called for law-enforcement agencies to establish a coordinated mechanism to document recent threats and violent incidents targeting Sikhs in Alberta.
Describing the attack as a warning that places of worship must not be left vulnerable, UNITED SIKHS called for immediate action at all levels of government to protect Sikh institutions, ensure justice and safeguard the community’s right to practise its faith without fear.
