Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab in-charge and national General Secretary Nitin Nabin has kept the possibility of a future alliance between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) open, saying the party is neither in favour of nor opposed to such a tie-up at present.
Nabin said the BJP would take a considered decision on the issue after about six months, by which time the party would assess the political situation and public mood in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
He said the BJP is currently focused on strengthening its organisational network across all 117 Assembly constituencies in the state.
“As of now, we are preparing to contest all 117 seats. After six months, we will review the situation, take feedback from the people and then decide our future course of action,” he said.
The remarks assume political significance as Punjab has already entered election mode despite the Assembly elections being scheduled for February 2027.
The BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal had remained one of the country’s longest-standing political alliances, jointly contesting elections and sharing power in Punjab for several years.
However, the alliance collapsed during the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s three farm laws. While the SAD initially supported the BJP-led NDA government, mounting opposition from Punjab’s farming community prompted the party to withdraw its support to the legislation.
Former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against the farm laws, following which the SAD formally ended its alliance with the BJP, bringing to a close a political partnership that had flourished during the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
Since then, leaders from both parties have expressed differing views on the possibility of reviving the alliance.
Political observers believe that even if both parties eventually decide to reunite, a key issue would be determining which party would assume the role of the senior alliance partner, as both the BJP and the SAD have considerably altered their political strategies and electoral ambitions in Punjab over the past few years.
