An explosive-laden drone was intercepted and shot down near the US Consulate in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, on Saturday, according to a Kurdish security source.
The drone was brought down by the US Consulate’s air defence system in the afternoon. No casualties or damage were reported.
The latest incident comes as Erbil witnesses a series of drone attacks targeting locations linked to the United States, including the US Consulate and the international coalition base near Erbil International Airport.
On Friday, six drones reportedly targeted the Erbil airport area. Security officials said five were intercepted near the airport, while a sixth crashed into nearby farmland, igniting a fire that was later extinguished by civil defence teams.
The attacks come against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent exchanges of strikes between the United States and Iran.
In a related development, Kuwait on Thursday reported that hostile drones struck the Al-Abdali border crossing with Iraq, causing material damage but no casualties. The Kuwait Army said explosive ordnance disposal teams were deployed to clear drone debris, while security forces remained on high alert to safeguard the country’s borders. Authorities have not identified those responsible for the attack.
Investigations into the latest drone incidents remain ongoing, and no group has claimed responsibility so far.
