Surat, July 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
A 25-year-old video creator has been arrested by the Surat City Crime Branch for allegedly circulating a doctored social media post related to the ongoing student protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, police said on Saturday.
According to officials, the viral post, shared on July 24, carried the caption, “Heartfelt tribute to a girl at Jantar Mantar, Delhi,” along with a photograph of a young woman. Police said the claim was fabricated, as no such incident had occurred, and alleged that the content was intended to spread rumours, incite hostility and disturb public peace.
Following the circulation of the post, the Surat Cyber Crime Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Using technical surveillance, social media monitoring and human intelligence, the Surat City Crime Branch identified and arrested the accused, Aditya Baraiya, a resident of the Varachha area of Surat and a native of Bhavnagar district. He was later handed over to the Surat Cyber Crime Police Station for further investigation.
Police said the action was part of intensified monitoring of social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, X and Instagram, to identify content capable of disrupting law and order.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2008.
Surat City Police also appealed to the public to verify the authenticity of social media posts before sharing them and urged citizens to report fake or misleading content to help curb the spread of misinformation.
