A Glasgow-based Indian restaurant overcame an unexpected legal challenge over its name after adding a simple tagline that clarified its cultural identity, according to restaurateur and Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alok Singh.
Singh said his restaurant, Firangi, faced legal objections within weeks of opening after authorities raised concerns that the name could be interpreted as a racially offensive reference to white people. The matter eventually reached court, putting the restaurant’s branding at risk.
He explained that the issue was resolved by adding the tagline “Yet Indian By Nature” beneath the restaurant’s name. Since he already owned the trademark for “Indian By Nature,” his legal team advised incorporating it into the branding to establish the restaurant’s identity as an Indian establishment.
According to Singh, the revised branding demonstrated that the term “Firangi” was being used in its historical and cultural context rather than as a racial expression, allowing the restaurant to continue operating under its original name.
Reflecting on the episode, Singh said the experience illustrated how the same word can carry different meanings across cultures. In India, he noted, “Firangi” has traditionally been used to refer to foreigners and is not generally regarded as an offensive term, whereas it was interpreted differently in the Scottish legal context.
Beyond the hospitality sector, Singh is actively involved in politics as the second officer of the Scottish National Party’s Renfrew branch. He said the party had supported him throughout the legal process and expressed hope of contesting future local council elections.
Singh also highlighted the growing Indian diaspora in Scotland and strengthening ties between India and Scotland as positive developments for businesses. He acknowledged the support of the Consulate General of India and said he takes pride in hosting Indian sportspersons and other distinguished visitors at his restaurant.
