Punjab Cabinet Minister for Prisons Dr Ravjot Singh on Monday inaugurated a 30-bed ward for prisoners and undertrials at Guru Nanak Medical College, Amritsar, built by the Punjab Government to strengthen healthcare facilities for inmates.
Dr Ravjot Singh said prisoners and undertrials were also part of society and ensuring access to appropriate healthcare was the responsibility of the government. He said the newly constructed ward would provide organised medical care while maintaining foolproof security during the treatment of inmates.
The Prisons Minister said the state government was taking continuous steps to improve healthcare facilities in jails, with attention being given not only to physical health but also to the mental health of prisoners. Efforts were also being made to ensure the availability of specialist doctors and other necessary healthcare services.
During his visit, Dr Ravjot Singh inspected the new ward and reviewed the facilities. He directed officials to ensure quality treatment, cleanliness and adequate security for prisoners and undertrials receiving medical care.

Dr Ravjot Singh Visits Central Jail Amritsar
Following the inauguration, Dr Ravjot Singh visited Central Jail Amritsar and reviewed the facilities and overall arrangements for prisoners and undertrials.
The Minister interacted with inmates and sought their feedback on the facilities available inside the jail. He also heard their concerns and directed officials to address genuine requirements and ensure that all facilities mandated under the rules were provided.
Dr Ravjot Singh instructed jail authorities to maintain high security standards while ensuring proper attention to healthcare, cleanliness, food and other basic amenities. He said these measures were essential for making jail administration more effective and efficient.
