Film producer Boney Kapoor was among the prominent personalities who witnessed India’s historic football clash against five-time world champions Brazil at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium.

Kapoor took to Instagram on Sunday to share a series of photographs from the stadium, featuring his son and actor Arjun Kapoor as well as BJP leaders, including Manoj Tiwari and Suvendu Adhikari.

“Privileged to attend the historic international friendly match between India and Brazil at Kolkata’s iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) along with Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Shri @suvenduwb ji @manojtiwari.mp ji @shahnawazbjp ji @arjunkapoor @acharyamanishji ji @niteshkumarsinghljp and @upendrra.rai ji An unforgettable evening celebrating football, friendship and the spirit of sport,” Kapoor wrote in the caption.

The October 3 encounter was a landmark occasion for Indian football as the senior men’s teams of India and Brazil met for the first time. The match drew more than 51,000 spectators to the Salt Lake Stadium and brought one of the world’s most celebrated footballing nations to India for a senior international fixture.

India made a determined start and managed to frustrate Brazil during the opening stages, with the hosts maintaining a compact defensive shape. However, Brazil’s quality eventually told as Estevao opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Pedro doubled the advantage shortly before half-time.

Samuel Lino added Brazil’s third in the 58th minute and completed his brace in stoppage time as Brazil secured a 4-0 victory. Despite the scoreline, India’s early defensive resilience and fighting display earned appreciation on a historic night for the country’s football.

For Kolkata, the occasion carried particular significance. Football has deep roots in the city’s sporting culture, with clubs such as Mohun Bagan and East Bengal contributing to the game’s enduring popularity in Bengal.

The historic Brazil visit also added a major international dimension to that football tradition. The match had been announced by the All India Football Federation as one of the biggest fixtures in Indian football, with Brazil’s arrival marking a rare opportunity for the Indian team to test itself against one of the world’s most successful football nations.

Kapoor’s stadium appearance added a Bollywood presence to an evening that brought together sport, entertainment and politics as Kolkata witnessed a first-of-its-kind India-Brazil senior men’s international football contest.
