Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ram Kadam on Sunday criticised Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his allegations of “vote chori” linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying he should clarify whether he opposes the removal of bogus voters.
Speaking to IANS, Kadam accused Gandhi of repeatedly making allegations and recalled that the Congress had previously organised a rally in Maharashtra demanding the removal of bogus voters and seeking the postponement of elections.
“In the future, whenever a list is made of those leaders who keep on lying, Rahul Gandhi’s name will be mentioned at the top,” Kadam said, alleging that Gandhi had overlooked his own party’s earlier demands.
Defending the SIR process, the BJP MLA described it as an exercise to clean electoral rolls and argued that allegations made without evidence amounted to an attack on democracy. He also accused Gandhi of undermining the Constitution and constitutional institutions.
Kadam also criticised senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram for his remarks against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. On Saturday, Chidambaram had said that the “wisest thing” the CEC could do was to resign immediately, amid reports of internal differences within the Election Commission.
Kadam described the Opposition’s allegations against the CEC as a “planned conspiracy” and alleged that forces abroad were funding efforts to undermine India’s constitutional institutions and create unrest. He also criticised the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, and other Opposition leaders over their stance.
Referring to a reported 7.8 per cent increase in real GDP, Kadam praised the country’s economic progress and said India was receiving appreciation from leaders of countries including the United States, Australia and Russia. He attributed the country’s development to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
His remarks came amid an ongoing political dispute over the revision of electoral rolls and allegations concerning the Election Commission.
