Iran will pursue legal action in international courts over the US attack on and seizure of an Iranian-flagged commercial vessel during a ceasefire between Tehran and Washington in April, a senior Iranian shipping official has said, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.
Mohammad-Reza Modarres Khiabani, CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, said the seizure of the container ship Touska by US forces on April 19, off the coast of Iran’s southeastern Chabahar port in the Gulf of Oman, would be challenged through international legal channels.
Describing the incident as a “war crime,” Khiabani said the vessel was carrying medicines intended for the Iranian Red Crescent Society and dialysis patients. He argued that attacking a commercial ship during a ceasefire amounted to a violation of the truce and international law, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Khiabani also alleged that the US Navy had struck the Touska’s engine room and taken its 28 crew members hostage. He further said that any form of naval blockade violated international law and constituted a hostile act.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump declined to disclose his administration’s next move regarding Iran, telling reporters at the White House that the situation was “working out very well” and predicting that the conflict would not last long.
Speaking before departing aboard Marine One, Trump suggested that revealing his next step would make major news but did not specify what action Washington was considering or provide a timeline.
“Iran is not doing well,” Trump said, while offering no further details about the administration’s plans.
During the same exchange, Trump also referred to Iran while discussing global energy supplies and his efforts to encourage European countries to increase diesel supplies to the market.
