Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri appeared before the Akal Takht Sahib at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar on Saturday and sought forgiveness for visiting the residence of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to offer condolences following his death in August.
Speaking to IANS, Bidhuri said he met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and acknowledged his mistake in visiting Kumar’s residence.
“I had a great burden on my mind. When Sajjan Kumar passed away, we were passing by his house and stopped there for some time. News reports regarding it were also published,” Bidhuri said.
He added that he had sought forgiveness at the Akal Takht and reiterated his long-standing demand for strict punishment for those responsible for the killing of Sikhs during the 1984 anti-Sikh violence.
Bidhuri said he had consistently called for justice for the victims, regardless of which political party was in power. He also recalled raising the issue with former Prime Minister V.P. Singh after the Janata Dal government came to power at the Centre in 1990. According to Bidhuri, a committee was subsequently formed, which made 21 recommendations.
The BJP MP said he experienced a sense of peace after seeking forgiveness and also paid obeisance at the Akal Takht Sahib and the Golden Temple.
Bidhuri was among three BJP MPs, along with Kamaljeet Sehrawat and Yogender Chandolia, who had visited Sajjan Kumar’s residence following his death in August. Kumar was convicted in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The visit had drawn criticism within the BJP. Party president Nitin Nabin had reportedly expressed displeasure and reprimanded the three MPs over their visit.
Senior advocate and BJP leader H.S. Phoolka had also criticised the MPs, saying sympathy should be reserved for the victims and their families, many of whom continue to live with the trauma of the violence. Phoolka had also called for their boycott.
