A local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and his father were found dead under mysterious circumstances at their residence in Ashoknagar in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Saturday, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Sanjay Raut, 49, and his father, Kamal Raut, 72. They lived in Ward No. 13 of Ashoknagar-Kalyangarh Municipality.
According to a district police officer, Sanjay’s body was discovered at the residence on Saturday afternoon, while his father was found unconscious in the same room. Kamal was taken to Ashoknagar State General Hospital, where he later died.
Local residents told media persons that Sanjay was found hanging at the house. A resident also claimed that Kamal may have taken sleeping pills. However, police said the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths would be established after the postmortem examinations.
The bodies of both father and son have been sent for postmortem, and the Ashoknagar police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the cause of death.
Sanjay was an active local TMC leader and was known to be a close confidant of Narayan Goswami, a former party legislator from the Ashoknagar Assembly constituency. Alongside his political activities, Sanjay was also involved in the export-import business.
Some local residents said he had reportedly been anxious recently over business-related losses. Police have not confirmed whether these circumstances were connected to the deaths.
Sanjay was unmarried and lived with his father. Police are investigating all aspects of the case, and the cause and circumstances of the deaths remain undetermined pending further findings.
