The INDIA bloc held a meeting in Jammu on Saturday to discuss its proposed course of action over allegations concerning the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and its demand for action against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The meeting was presided over by senior Congress leader and former minister Raman Bhalla. Participants discussed the Opposition alliance’s ongoing campaign on electoral transparency, accountability and the functioning of the poll panel, along with plans for further political mobilisation.
The INDIA bloc has accused the Election Commission of what it describes as “institutional capture” and has demanded the removal, prosecution and arrest of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition leaders have also raised allegations of electoral malpractice and “vote theft” in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The alliance has questioned the alleged deletion of more than 13 crore voter names during the SIR exercise and accused the CEC of failing to respond to its concerns. Opposition MPs have also moved to submit an impeachment notice against Kumar, according to the campaign details outlined by the alliance.
The Jammu meeting comes amid a series of protests and political programmes organised by the Congress and other Opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir. The Congress had held demonstrations across the Union Territory on September 28, with Bhalla calling for greater transparency and accountability in the Election Commission’s functioning.
As part of its wider campaign, the INDIA bloc has announced a pan-India programme from October 2 to 8, featuring district-level “Save Democracy” rallies and public demonstrations. Opposition MPs have also planned a march to the Election Commission’s office in New Delhi on October 6.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other alliance leaders have called for a return to paper ballots instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), as well as the use of pre-SIR electoral rolls in future elections.
The participants at the Jammu meeting deliberated on the alliance’s further strategy and mobilisation in support of its demands concerning electoral and democratic issues.
