The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licence of West Bengal-based Creative Bakers and Confectioners Private Limited with immediate effect after an inspection found multiple serious hygiene and food safety violations at its manufacturing facility.
In a separate enforcement action, the food regulator has also ordered Everest Food Products Private Limited to recall a batch of its pre-packed cumin powder after laboratory testing detected pesticide residues above permissible limits.
According to FSSAI, inspectors found dirt, grease, dust, cobwebs and flies in areas used for food production and handling at the Creative Bakers facility. Perishable raw materials were reportedly being stored in open conditions, while rusted and inadequately cleaned containers were being used for raw and semi-finished products.
The inspection also found waste material, old stock, rejected lots and scrap accumulated in food-handling areas. Rusting equipment, peeling paint, damp conditions and damaged floor tiles were among the other deficiencies recorded by the inspection team.
FSSAI said the company had also failed to properly maintain several mandatory food safety records and monitoring systems. These included water and finished-product testing records, temperature-monitoring logs, equipment calibration and preventive maintenance records, mock recall documentation, consumer complaint registers, employee training records and audit reports.
Following the findings, FSSAI directed the food business operator to immediately stop all food-related activities during the period of licence suspension.
In the separate case involving Everest Food Products, FSSAI ordered the recall of a batch of pre-packed cumin powder after laboratory analysis found pesticide residues exceeding the prescribed maximum limits.
The sample was collected from the premises of Riverside Resorts & Holiday Homes in Goa and was subsequently declared “unsafe” by a Food Analyst under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
FSSAI said the laboratory report detected residues of Azoxystrobin and Thiamethoxam at levels above the prescribed maximum limits.
The two enforcement actions form part of the food regulator’s measures to address violations of food safety and hygiene standards and ensure compliance by food business operators.
