Kolkata Police have arrested a 56-year-old man for allegedly molesting two women in the lobby of a five-star hotel where members of the Brazilian football team were celebrating their victory over India.
The incident reportedly took place late on Saturday night. Following a complaint by one of the women, a case was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Pragati Maidan police station.
Kolkata Police Additional Commissioner (Detective Department) Kunal Agarwal said that CCTV footage from the hotel was being examined and that appropriate action would be taken after a thorough investigation.
According to the police, the complainant, a resident of Dimapur in Nagaland, stated that she and a companion were in the hotel lobby between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. while celebrating with members of the Brazilian football team. She alleged that an unidentified man touched them inappropriately, making them uncomfortable.
The Brazilian team was in Kolkata on Saturday for a friendly match against India at Salt Lake Stadium, where it secured a four-goal victory. Following the match, the team returned to the five-star hotel to celebrate.
Police examined the hotel’s CCTV footage and identified a suspect by matching the visuals with the description provided by the complainant. The woman subsequently identified the man after viewing the footage, police said.
Investigators tracked the suspect’s movements through CCTV footage before arresting him from a room in the hotel.
The arrested man has been identified as Palash Roy, 56, a resident of Lotus Boulevard, Sector 100, Noida, in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district.
Police said they were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the accused’s presence at the hotel and his movements. The allegations and other details are being verified through CCTV footage and additional evidence.
