Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday called for societal introspection over slogans expressing distrust of men, questioning why girls had reached a point where they felt compelled to voice such sentiments.

Addressing a scholarship distribution programme in Bhopal, Chouhan referred to the social media slogan, “Ek kachori, do samosa, in mardon ka kya bharosa” (one kachori, two samosas, what can one trust about these men), and urged society to reflect on the circumstances that had given rise to it.

“Why has it come to such a pass that my daughters have to write such a slogan?” he asked, stressing that women and girls must be able to live with dignity and feel safe.

Chouhan observed that women could sometimes face inappropriate behaviour even from people they know. He said ensuring their safety and dignity was not merely the responsibility of families but a collective responsibility of society.

“If our sisters and daughters cannot trust men, how will society and the country move forward?” he said, urging men, boys and parents to introspect and ensure that women are treated with respect.

The minister was speaking at a programme where scholarships were distributed to children of drivers. Under the scheme, students in Classes 8 to 10 securing more than 60 per cent marks will receive ₹4,000 annually, while those in Classes 11 and 12 will get ₹4,500. Students scoring more than 90 per cent marks will receive ₹5,000, he said.

Chouhan also announced support for students through competitive examination coaching and skill-development initiatives. He said ‘Mama Coaching Classes’ had been launched in his parliamentary constituency of Vidisha to help students prepare for government jobs. Efforts would also be made to connect them with skill-development programmes to support future employment and self-employment.

Earlier, Chouhan attended the 11th annual conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India at Sanchi in Vidisha. Describing diabetes as a growing health challenge, he emphasised the importance of prevention, awareness, treatment and research.
