A Special NDPS Court in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district has sentenced a drug trafficker to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for possessing commercial quantities of MDMA procured through international postal parcels, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said on Sunday.
Pankaj Sharma, a Solan resident, was convicted under Section 22(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, following an investigation by the NCB’s Chandigarh Zonal Unit.
Special Judge-II, Solan, pronounced the sentence on Saturday in connection with Crime No. 16/2023, registered on July 4, 2023.
According to the NCB, its Chandigarh unit received specific intelligence on July 4, 2023, about an international postal parcel originating in the United Kingdom that was suspected to contain narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances.
After obtaining authorisation for a controlled delivery under Section 50A of the NDPS Act, NCB officials recovered 4.7 grams of cocaine from the parcel before conducting the delivery operation at the Head Post Office in Solan.
Sharma took delivery of the parcel and was apprehended at the spot, the agency said.
A second parcel, originating from France and collected by Sharma at the same time, was also searched. The NCB recovered 56.2 grams of MDMA from it — more than five times the notified commercial quantity of 10 grams for the drug under the NDPS Act.
The investigation subsequently led officials to a third parcel originating from Germany and addressed to Sharma. The parcel contained another 4.4 grams of cocaine, the agency said.
The NCB said its investigation established that Sharma had been procuring narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances from multiple European countries through international postal channels.
The agency filed a complaint under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act before the Special Judge, Solan, on December 19, 2023, eventually leading to Sharma’s conviction and sentencing.
