A 32-year-old man was taken into custody after allegedly killing four members of his family and injuring three others in a stick attack at Amoda village in Madhya Pradesh’s Anuppur district on Saturday, police said.
The accused, identified as Prem Singh Gond, was living with his mother at his maternal grandparents’ house in the village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the local police station.
According to police, Prem Singh had allegedly assaulted village temple priest Gangaram on Friday night. Following the incident, villagers restrained him by tying his hands and feet.
Between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday, his mother, Anupia Bai, 50, allegedly untied him. Prem Singh then picked up a stick lying nearby and attacked his family members, police said.
His maternal grandmother, Bhanni Bai Gond, 70, maternal grandfather, Sampat Singh Gond, 75, and mother, Anupia Bai, died in the attack.
He also allegedly assaulted his maternal uncle, Chain Singh, and his three daughters — Chanchal, 6, Bharti, 3, and Monica. Monica, who was seriously injured, later died during treatment, taking the death toll to four.
Chain Singh, Chanchal and Bharti are undergoing treatment at Shahdol Hospital. Temple priest Gangaram is also receiving medical care for injuries sustained in the earlier assault, police said.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team reached the village and secured the area. A forensic team collected evidence from the scene.
“Prem Singh has been taken into custody, and a forensic team has collected evidence from the spot. Further investigation is underway,” a police official said.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been established. The accused is being questioned, while investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the incident.
