Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has targeted at least seven oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz over the past five days, describing the vessels as “violating” ships, according to a report by semi-official Fars news agency.
Fars reported that the IRGC Navy had targeted more than one oil tanker per day, despite repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that the strategic waterway was open and under American control.
Citing independent military observer MenchOsint, Fars reported that two oil tankers were hit in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, with one incident occurring near the waterway’s entrance and the other involving a vessel while it was exiting.
MenchOsint also reported that two Kuwaiti tankers, Al Funtas and Kazimah III, and three vessels from the United Arab Emirates — Sinbad, Mersin Prosperity and Al Ruwais — had been struck in the strait over the preceding four days.
Meanwhile, Trump said on Saturday that the war with Iran would end “very quickly”, predicting a sharp decline in global oil prices once the conflict was over.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in Texas and later during a visit to a Peterbilt Motors facility in Denton, Trump portrayed Iran as facing severe economic and military setbacks. He claimed the country had an inflation rate of 301 per cent, lacked financial resources and had suffered the destruction of its military capabilities.
“Iran will very soon be ending one way or the other,” Trump said, adding that oil prices would “drop like a rock” once the conflict ended.
Iran tightened its restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz on February 28, barring safe passage for vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States following joint strikes by the two countries on Iranian territory.
