At least two people were killed and dozens detained following a shooting at a shopping centre near California State University, Northridge, in Los Angeles, according to local media reports.
The shooting took place shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday at University Plaza, a popular shopping centre located about one block from the university campus. Police responded to reports of a large gathering and reportedly heard gunfire upon arriving at the scene.
Following the incident, dozens of people were detained outside a building at the plaza. According to media reports, many of those detained had been inside a nearby lounge when the shooting occurred.
Los Angeles Police Department Lieutenant Guy Golan said the victims were a man and a woman, both believed to be between 18 and 25 years old, local television station KTLA reported.
Authorities were also searching for another possible victim, while investigators continued examining the venue and surrounding area to establish the circumstances of the shooting.
The incident comes amid other deadly shootings in the United States. Earlier in September, two people were killed in a shooting at a high-rise apartment building in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The suspect died by suicide, while six others, including three police officers, were injured.
According to local reports, Minneapolis police officers were dispatched to the scene at around 4:36 p.m. on September 2. Officers entering the building encountered victims and heard further gunfire, which led them to an upper floor. A haze on that floor significantly restricted visibility, and three officers were injured, two of them by gunfire.
